WEATHER IN VIETNAM

Vietnam's diverse geography

Vietnam’s diverse geography unfolds a tapestry of weather experiences across the country. Whether you’re seeking the perfect tropical getaway or a cooler retreat, there’s a time and place for everyone. Here’s your guide to Vietnam’s major regions and their climate, so you know when to pack your sunscreen or your sweater.

NORTHERN VIETNAM:

Halong Bay Weather

  • December – March: Cool, cold & cloudy
  • April – June: Clear with blue sky
  • June – August: Hot, humid, carefully with typhoon
  • September – November: Cold with strong wind, misty and rainy

If Halong Bay is your destination, plan your visit from April to June or September to November. You’ll be rewarded with sunny skies and pleasant temperatures. At other times, expect occasional downpours, heavy mist, and the chance of tropical storms. January can be quite chilly, so layer up.

Hanoi Weather

  • December – March: Cool, cold, misty & cloudy
  • April – June: Hot, sunny, clear with blue sky
  • June – August: Hot, humid, rainy
  • September – November: Cool, clear with blue sky

For Hanoi, the ideal time is usually from April to June or September to December. April offers sunny days with temperatures sometimes exceeding 30 degrees. However, visiting in June means enduring sweltering heat and heavy rains (June to August). December is cool and misty, with surprisingly cold temperatures from late December to March.

Sapa Weather

  • December – March: Misty & cloudy
  • April – June: Warm, clear skies, sunny
  • June – August: Stormy, warm, humid
  • September – November: Cool, clear with blue sky, dry

Sapa boasts cooler temperatures, particularly from late December to March, with occasional snowfall in January. Late April reveals Sapa at its best with blooming flowers and clear skies. Early October is also lovely, as the golden rice paddies are ready for harvest.

CENTRAL VIETNAM:

Hue Weather

  • September – February: Cool to cold, rainy, cloudy, carefully with typhoon
  • March – August: Hot, sunny, clear with blue sky

Huế experiences a late rainy season from September to February, with storms and cooler, wet days. Some flooding may occur from September to November. Early in the year, temperatures drop to around 15 degrees, with occasional mist. The rest of the year is dry, with perfect beach weather in July.

Hoi An Weather

  • September – January: Cool, rainy, cloudy, carefully with flood
  • February – August: Hot, sunny, clear with blue sky

Tropical storms hit Hội An hard starting in September, with March being a great time to visit when the town is adorned with blossoms. From May to August, prepare for hot weather, and from September to November, expect plenty of rain and occasional flooding. January is the coldest time before the Vietnamese New Year.

Nha Trang Weather

  • September to December: Cool, rainy, cloudy
  • January – August: Hot, sunny, clear with blue sky

Nha Trang boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year. While some monsoons occur between September and December, Nha Trang’s rainy season is brief. Most of the year, expect pleasant temperatures with cooling sea breezes, although July and August can be hot.

Da Lat Weather

  • April – October: Rainy, hot, cloudy
  • November – May: Cool & cold, dry, clear with blue sky

Da Lat offers a temperate climate throughout the year. With cool temperatures, it’s an excellent escape from the heat. The rainy season is from April to October, and temperatures range from 20 degrees in January to 30 degrees in July.

SOUTHERN VIETNAM:

HCMC & Mekong Delta Weather

  • May to November: Sporadic rainfall, hot, humid
  • December to April: Clear with blue sky, hot, sunny

Southern Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City feature consistent temperatures year-round. HCMC is either hot and dry or hot and rainy. From May to November, expect afternoon downpours, but the rest of the year offers reliable sunshine.

Phu Quoc Weather

  • July – September: Stormy, hot, humid
  • October – June: Clear with blue sky, hot, sunny

Phu Quoc, an island paradise, enjoys fantastic weather year-round. However, avoid the rainy season from July to September when storms may disrupt your beach plans. December and January are perfect for a tropical escape.

Whether you’re a sun-seeker or prefer a cooler retreat, Vietnam’s diverse climate has you covered.
