VIETNAM OVERVIEW

VIETNAM CURRENCY & PAYMENT
Navigating Currency and Payments in Vietnam
Currency in Vietnam: The official currency in Vietnam is the Vietnam đồng, symbolized as ₫ or VND. Vietnamese currency includes small paper bills (no coins are used) and larger polymer bills, ranging from 10,000 VND to 500,000 VND. To simplify amounts, you can mentally remove three zeros. For a quick VND to USD conversion, deduct three zeros and divide by 23.
Helpful Tip: Beware of the resemblance between the 20,000 VND and 500,000 VND bills, both being shades of blue; double-check before making payments.
Accessing Cash and Currency Exchange:
Upon your arrival in Vietnam, having some local currency is convenient. International cardholders can find ATMs that accept foreign cards just outside major airport arrival gates. In most Vietnamese cities, ATMs are prevalent and accessible. Major cards like Visa are accepted at over 20,000 ATMs across the country. Cash withdrawal limits per transaction may vary, typically ranging from 2 million VND (just under $100) to 3 million VND at local bank ATMs and between 5 million VND and 10 million VND at international bank ATMs.
You can also exchange currency at Vietnam’s international airports before exiting. Once at your destination, currency exchange services are usually available at hotels, tourist areas, and local banks.
Travel Tip: When venturing into remote parts of Vietnam, particularly for craft or textile purchases from local artisans, consider withdrawing extra cash in advance.
Credit Card Usage in Vietnam:
While cash remains the preferred mode of payment for small purchases and street vendors, major credit card providers, like Visa, are widely accepted in Vietnam. Hotels, tour operators, boutiques, restaurants, grocery stores, and spas commonly take international debit and credit cards. Note that conversion rates and fees may be set by your card provider. With few exceptions, you can manage most of your significant travel expenses in Vietnam with your card, whether in-person or online, reducing the need to carry and convert large amounts of cash.
Understanding Local Prices:
When budgeting for your Vietnam trip, there are options to suit all preferences
- Street Coffee: 25,000 VND (1 USD)
- Street Food Dishes like Pho (beef noodle): 45,000 VND (2 USD)
- Drinks in a local brand Café: 55,000 VND (2.50 USD)
- Inner City Taxi: 35,000 to 100,000 VND (1.50 to 4 USD)
- 60-Minute Foot Massage at Local Spa: 350,000 VND (15 USD)
- Budget Hostel: 300,000 VND (13 USD) per night
- Mid-Range Hotel: 700,000 VND (30 USD) per night
- Luxury Hotel: 3.5 million VND (150 USD) per night
Safety and Security:
Vietnam is generally a safe destination for travelers. However, it’s wise to use common sense when safeguarding your valuables and avoid drawing undue attention to them in public spaces. Utilize the in-room hotel safe for storing cash, cards, and valuable items while heading out. Keep wallets and purses close in crowded areas. Cards equipped with security features like Visa’s 3D security system can provide additional protection against loss or fraud, reducing concerns about your money’s safety.
Travel Tip: Many businesses and taxi services in Vietnam now offer Visa contactless payments, allowing you to tap your card directly on a terminal. This not only offers convenience but also minimizes health risks, as your card never leaves your hand.
Tipping Etiquette:
Tipping is not an entrenched custom in Vietnamese culture, and there are no set rules. However, tipping is increasingly practiced in some situations, like beauty salons and private tours. While tipping in restaurants and cafes is not expected, it is always appreciated. When deciding the tip amount, considering that a local meal costs approximately 30,000 VND to 40,000 VND can help you determine the value of your tip.
In popular shopping areas and markets, bargaining is common. If you’re shopping in a tourist-heavy area, gentle negotiation can often secure a reduced price. It’s advisable to explore and inquire at multiple shops or vendors to gauge a general price range before making a purchase.
