VIETNAM SAFETY TIPS

Staying Safe While Traveling in Vietnam: Your Guide

Vietnam, in general, is a welcoming and secure destination for travelers. While violent incidents are rare, it’s essential to remain vigilant, especially in bustling urban centers where petty theft can be a concern. Here are some safety tips to ensure your journey remains trouble-free

Safeguard Your Valuables

Whenever possible, secure your valuable belongings in the hotel safe. Additionally, it’s a good practice to keep a record of your traveler’s cheque numbers and credit card information in a separate location, as a precaution.

Beware of Pickpocketing

Avoid placing your wallet or mobile phone in easily accessible areas, such as the back pocket of your pants or outer zip-up compartments on backpacks. Exercise extra caution when navigating crowded places like markets, ports, and train stations.

Stay Cautious in big cities

In big cities, incidents of pickpocketing and purse snatching are relatively more common than in smaller towns or cities. Some thieves employ swift motorcycle getaways after snatching belongings. If you choose to ride a cyclo (pedicab), it’s advisable not to display or carry items of significant personal value, such as jewelry or large sums of money. Opt for safer options like a discreet money belt.

Nighttime Vigilance

Avoid walking alone after dark and exercise caution. It’s generally advisable to steer clear of cyclos or motorbike taxis at night. Instead, rely on your hotel or restaurant to arrange transportation through a reputable taxi firm. In the unfortunate event of a confrontation with a mugger, it’s generally safer not to resist.

Traffic Awareness

Vietnam’s traffic can be chaotic, making it crucial to prioritize safety while navigating. If you decide to ride a motorcycle, ensure you possess an international driver’s license and always wear a helmet. Note that your travel insurance might not cover accidents on motorcycles, regardless of whether you are the driver or a passenger.

Crossing the Street

Crossing the street in Vietnam, especially in urban centers, can be a unique experience. To do so safely, maintain a slow and steady walking pace. Resist the urge to dart across or weave through traffic. Instead, walk deliberately, maintain eye contact with drivers, and look up as you traverse. For the best results, consider following the lead of a local pedestrian.

By adhering to these safety guidelines, you can fully enjoy your journey through Vietnam with peace of mind.
